Characteristics of rechargeable LED spotlights, and their choice

Прожектор аккумуляторный светодиодныйРазновидности лент и светодиодов

Rechargeable LED spotlight is a versatile lighting device that is useful in a variety of situations. The devices are suitable for home and summer cottage, useful at a construction site, camping and fishing. And most importantly, they are completely autonomous, do not depend on the network and replenish the spent energy, fueled by the sun’s rays.

Advantages and disadvantages of rechargeable LED spotlights

When choosing a LED spotlight to illuminate a particular area, it is important to evaluate in advance all the advantages and disadvantages of this lighting device.

Rechargeable LED Spotlight

Pros:

  • Economical power consumption. LED technologies are economical in terms of electricity consumption. When the power is equal to other light sources, LED lamps burn an order of magnitude brighter.
  • Continuous operation. LED lamps are designed for continuous operation for 30-50 thousand hours. For comparison, incandescent lamps have a resource of 1 thousand hours, fluorescent lamps – 10 thousand hours.
  • Wide color range. The color temperature of lighting affects the comfort and correctness of the color rendering of the surrounding objects. When buying a LED spotlight, it is possible to choose an option that emits light of different shades.
  • Resistant to harsh operating conditions. LED spotlights are shock and shock resistant, able to work in a variety of positions and in a wide temperature range – from -40 to +40°C. They are also resistant to extreme weather conditions – wind, rain, hail.
  • Do not heat up. LED spotlights do not need special cooling, as the LEDs do not heat up.
  • Functionality. It is possible to create a directed light beam. This allows high-quality illumination of a given area. It is possible to install various automation elements, for example, light and motion sensors – they allow the spotlights to work in automatic mode.

Minuses:

  • There is a power supply. The voltage converter slightly increases the size of the spotlight, compared to analogues.
  • Complicated repair. If individual LEDs fail, it is very difficult to change them yourself.
  • High price. But this disadvantage is more than offset by a long service life and lack of maintenance costs.

What are the criteria for choosing a projector?

On the market, LED spotlights, like all other LED products, are presented in a wide range. Without understanding the characteristics, it is difficult to choose the optimal model. Below are the criteria to be guided by when choosing LED spotlights.

The strength of the luminous flux

This parameter determines the brightness of the LED spotlight and is measured in lumens. It is always indicated in the technical data sheet of the product. The illumination of the object depends on it.

The quality of lighting, in addition to the strength of the luminous flux, is also affected by:

  • square;
  • beam width;
  • distance to the object.

To select a spotlight with the desired light output strength, you can calculate according to the formula F = E * S, where:

  • F is the required luminous flux, lumens;
  • E is the illumination of the object, lux;
  • S is the area of the object, sq. m.

Power

It is measured in watts (W) and is used to calculate the energy consumed by electrical equipment. The lower the power of the device, the cheaper its operation. However, the brightness depends on the power, the higher it is, the brighter the light.

Table: How the power consumption of a floodlight determines its suitability for solving the tasks:

Dependent quantitiesPower 200 WPower 100 WPower 50 WPower 10 W
Backlight, m25eighteenfourteen7
Normal light, mteneight53
Strong light, m76four2

The above table is valid only for flooding Led-spotlights, for lamps of a different type, the dependence is completely different.

Lighting sector

The width of the light beam emanating from the device depends on this parameter. It largely depends on the design and purpose of the spotlights.

Rechargeable LED spotlights

Depending on the illuminated sector (solid angle), the following types of spotlights are distinguished:

  • Far. These devices are distinguished by high power, but have a narrow light beam – about 10-20 °. They are usually used to illuminate the area from a long distance.
  • flooding. The most common type of spotlights. There are different power, with a wide sector of illumination. They are used to illuminate areas and buildings, parking lots and parking lots, construction sites and streets.
  • Accent. These are usually narrowly targeted low power models. They are used to highlight small elements that need to be emphasized.

Life time

The service life of LEDs, compared to other types of lamps, is very long – 50 thousand hours or more. With use, the amount of light emitted by LED lamps gradually decreases. At the end of the life cycle, the light intensity is less than half of the original value.

To eliminate misunderstandings regarding the correct operation of LED lamps, the term “effective life” was introduced. This characteristic is measured in hours. For example, marking L70 means that during the declared service life, the lamp will have a brightness of at least 70% of the nominal value.

When buying a LED spotlight, they are guided by the effective operating time, and not by the full one. You should also pay attention to the warranty. If the manufacturer indicated only the service life (and for dubious firms it can be indicated arbitrarily long), it is better not to take his products.

Protection class

Luminaires, even being indoors, are exposed to negative environmental influences – dust or condensate settles on them, the temperature can change dramatically. Searchlights located on the street, in addition, experience the action of wind, snow, rain, frost.

The duration and quality of operation of LED spotlights largely depend on the degree of protection from the environment. This parameter is denoted by the letters IP and numbers. The first describes the level of protection against solid particles, the second – from water. The larger the value, the better the instrument protection.

It is not advisable to install a floodlight with a protection class less than IP54 outdoors – it will stop working after the first rain, and after a few weeks a layer of dust will lie on its reflectors.

Housing material

In street conditions, when the spotlight is constantly affected by the environment – wind, direct sunlight, heat and frost, any plastic will quickly burn out and lose its properties. That is why good spotlights have a metal body. Analogues made of plastic will also work, but much less.

LED arrays require efficient heat dissipation. A metal casing can cope with this task. It makes sense to use plastic floodlights only under awnings, on semi-closed or completely closed objects.

Spotlights with a plastic body are cheaper than metal counterparts. In models with low power emitters, the problem of heat removal is solved by installing a built-in metal radiator.

Additional functionality

In many lighting fixtures, including spotlights, additional units are often installed that significantly expand their functionality and scope.

Examples of additional functions:

  • Light sensor – it automatically turns on the device at dusk and turns it off at dawn. Saves owners from the daily switching on and off of the spotlight and saves electricity consumption.
  • Motion sensors – devices equipped with them turn on only when a moving object appears in the control zone.

Food

Most standalone floodlights use lithium-ion technology, which has replaced lead-acid batteries and does not require constant maintenance.

The rechargeable LED spotlight is powered by its own battery, which makes the spotlight completely autonomous, independent of the power supply. The solar panel restores the battery during daylight hours, which feeds the device after dark.

Most non-standalone floodlights are equipped with their own network driver – they just need to be plugged into a power outlet. But there are spotlights that require low voltage – from 12 to 60 V. These will need an additional power supply.

Number of LEDs

Currently, there is no unequivocal opinion on which LED spotlight is better – with one or more LEDs. The first option, in theory, is more reliable, but it has a small power – only a few watts, no more (powerful diodes simply do not exist).

If there are a lot of LEDs in the spotlight, then its dimensions are increased, and the light scattering angle is corrected in them by means of lenses and reflectors. All this increases the price.

Matrices with many diodes that do not have cases are now common. Such blocks are compact and can have power measured in hundreds of watts. But such matrices have a minus – they cannot be repaired. If one LED fails, the entire unit has to be thrown away.

Manufacturer

Often it depends on the choice of the manufacturer how exactly the purchased projector will correspond to the declared parameters. And most importantly, the quality and durability of the LED device depends on the manufacturer.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a spotlight:

  • Products from Noname companies are much cheaper. But they shine worse and are often assembled from low-grade components, so they can burn out in a month or even a week.
  • Spotlights from leading manufacturers are often overpriced. You have to pay extra for the brand. You will definitely overpay if you buy the products of such “bison” as Philips or Hyunday. Their products are of high quality and durability, but they are also very expensive.
  • It is best to choose the “golden mean”. Products from lesser known manufacturers. For example, Jazzway, Feron or Luna. Their spotlights are much cheaper than leading companies, while they have been on the market for a long time and their quality is decent.

Lighting calculation based on LED spotlights

To calculate lighting, regardless of where the spotlight will be installed, it is necessary to determine the level of illumination of the territory, dividing it into zones.

Zoning of the site is required to determine the possibilities of automation that controls LED spotlights:

  • include in the work with the onset of darkness those searchlights that illuminate the road, illuminate buildings and structures;
  • turn on spotlights when moving objects enter their control zone – this applies to footpaths, verandas, gazebos, and other adjacent areas.

The calculation of lighting is performed on the basis of the values of specific illumination, which are available in special reference books on the organization of artificial lighting.

Specific power is selected for a specific room or outdoor area. Knowing it, you can calculate according to the formula: F \u003d E * S * Kz, where:

  • F is the required level of illumination;
  • E – specific illumination;
  • S is the territory of illumination;
  • Kz – LED safety factor.

Any light source, including a LED spotlight, has certain technical characteristics – for example, power (W), luminous flux (Lumens). All of them are reflected in the technical documentation that accompanies the device.

1 Lumen \u003d 1 Lux, in which illumination is measured. Having calculated the latter, according to the above formula, and knowing the luminous flux of one Led-spotlight, determine the required number of them. It is necessary to divide the obtained value F by the luminous flux of one device.

If the final result is not a whole, it is in any case rounded up. For example, in the calculation it turned out 15.4, which means that you need to take the number 16.

Various types of lighting with LED spotlights

Rechargeable LED spotlights, like their mains-powered counterparts, are widely used to illuminate a wide variety of areas.

For sports ground

The sports ground can be located both on the street and inside buildings, so the choice of a spotlight is made taking into account the conditions of its operation. Otherwise, the selection is no different from the selection of other lighting devices and is carried out according to generally accepted criteria.

Sports ground lighting requirements:

  • The light on the sports ground should be comfortable both for those involved in sports and for those who watch it – not to blind athletes and spectators.
  • Lighting should be even, evenly flooding the entire area.

In general, when it comes to lighting sports grounds, then the option with an autonomous spotlight is more suitable for open spaces, since they will be recharged without human intervention – from the energy of the sun.

for garage

The garage can use a variety of lighting fixtures, including rechargeable spotlights. But it should be noted that here they can only be used with a charged battery – there is nothing to recharge an autonomous searchlight in the garage.

The calculation of lighting for the garage is carried out according to the above formula, while:

  • lighting is created taking into account the work performed (separately for the area of standing transport, for an inspection pit, workbench, repair);
  • the fire safety of the spotlight and its ability to work at different temperatures are taken into account.

To illuminate the garage area, linear lamps are used, and the inspection pit and workbench are illuminated with directional spotlights that create narrow light fluxes.

Garage spotlights

Criteria for choosing spotlights for the garage:

  • purpose and type of execution;
  • power, supply voltage and luminous flux;
  • installation and fastening method.

For aquarium

LED spotlights can be used to illuminate aquariums located inside and outside buildings. They are needed, as a rule, for large and deep containers.

There is no special method for calculating lighting for aquariums, but, as a rule, 40 Lx (Lm) is taken per 1 liter of water. For aquariums in which light-loving algae grow – 60 Lx (Lm).

When choosing a spotlight for an aquarium, pay attention to such points:

  • how the inhabitants of the container relate to the strength of the light emitted by the spotlight;
  • level of moisture protection;
  • fastening method.

What is the best LED spotlight?

The choice of a searchlight, like any other technical device, should be made taking into account the tasks set. For floodlights, first of all, the area of the illuminated area / building is taken into account. It is believed that, on average, 25 sq. m should account for 200 watts.

To illuminate a small area, it is better to use round lamps – they are ideal for creating directional light. For uniform illumination of a large area, square spotlights are suitable – they give diffused light.

Rechargeable LED spotlights are a great alternative to those powered by electricity or a generator. They are especially useful where it is not possible to install stationary lamps or it is dangerous to lay cables – ground or air.
