How to make a lamp from LED strip?

The purchase of a ready-made LED lamp can be expensive, although the LED strip used for its manufacture is much cheaper, it can be easily cut into segments of any length and installed in a convenient place. In this regard, the issue of self-manufacturing a lamp from an LED strip becomes relevant.

The main areas of use of LED lamps are:

  • street lighting;
  • industrial facilities;
  • office lighting;
  • architectural structures;
  • decorative ceiling lighting in residential buildings, shopping malls, catering points, hotels;
  • decorative floor lighting on roads, pedestrian areas, stairs;
  • wall lighting in residential premises, catering points, cultural heritage sites;
  • spot LED lighting: paintings, cornices, various art objects;
  • transport facilities;
  • emergency lighting during evacuation actions and when lighting the most dangerous places;
  • explosion-proof lighting: oil and gas and mining facilities, gas stations;
  • lighting of premises with increased requirements for cleanliness: medical laboratories, treatment rooms, clinics, hospitals.

Necessary materials and tools

The main components of the LED strip lamp:

LED Strip Light

The optimal strip width is 8 mm. The LED strip is designed for 12 volts, but there are also designs for a 24-volt network. For this reason, in order to install and run a homemade LED lamp, you cannot do without a rectifier and adapter. With the help of a controller or adapter, AC 220 V is converted into DC 12 V, taking into account the power of electricity consumed by the tape. On the LED strip, a silicone layer can be applied on one or both sides, which protects the device from external influences. On the other side there is an adhesive layer for sticking to the surface. For the tape, as a rule, diodes and resistors of the SMD 3528 and 5050 brands are used without leads. This marking shows the dimensions of the diodes.

For an LED strip designed for a constant voltage of 12 volts, a
power supply is required – if you plug it into a 220 V network, it will immediately burn out.

Power Supply

The power supply can have different power and shape. It can be a low-power device that looks like a charger, or a powerful metal structure with a built-in cooler. Some power supplies have dimmers and remote controls. An
RGB ribbon requires an RGB controller to manage the color. Some power supply models have color and music effects and it is possible to control them over a Wi-Fi connection. Making a choice of a power supply for a homemade LED lamp is not difficult. This is done based on the power indicated on the tape. For example, if a tape 2 meters long has a power of 12 W, then it needs 24 W, but the power supply must be selected taking into account the margin of 20%.

Its dimensions should be 10×10 mm, and the length – 1.5 meters. As a corner, you can use a plastic electrical box. This replacement will not affect the quality of the lighting device. Other materials and tools:

  • screws;
  • small switch;
  • electric drill;
  • ruler and marker;
  • jigsaw;
  • pliers.

Assembling a lamp from an LED strip

A homemade LED lamp can have a device of various formats due to the flexibility of the LED strip. The lighting device can be horizontal, vertical and with legs. Assembly options depend on the type of device and the capabilities of the wizard.

Easy option

Do-it-yourself assembly of the simplest and most common lamp is carried out in several stages:

  1. The length of the corner or electric box is measured.
  2. Mounting holes are drilled in a corner or box for screws and a switch.
  3. The box is fixed in the place provided for it.
  4. A switch is inserted into the hole.
  5. Wires are soldered to the LED strip.
  6. The surface is degreased with acetone.
  7. An LED strip is installed along the corner or electric box.
  8. Using wires, you connect the power supply or adapter.
  9. All connections are checked.

This is how a horizontal structure is assembled, the most common for illuminating a cooking place in a kitchen, countertops, a desktop and hanging shelves. As decoration elements, you can use various materials that are combined with the surrounding interior.

When choosing a place to place this lighting device, it must be borne in mind that the optimal height from the illuminated area is 0.7-0.8 meters. So the most effective lighting will be organized.

Difficult option

From the LED strip, you can assemble a more complex and original design. You will need a 3 meter long LED strip and an RGB controller with a remote control. Also in the lamp there will be a nickel-plated pipe or furniture legs, planks, chipboard, plywood. This assembly option involves the following steps:

  1. Using an electric jigsaw, rings (6 pieces) of different diameters are cut (large, medium and small – 2 pieces each).
  2. For the base of the lighting device, one circle of chipboard is used.
  3. Plywood is used as the upper part, in which holes need to be cut (6 pieces).
  4. Holes for screws are made in the planks.
  5. Cut objects are painted in the desired color.
  6. On circles made of plywood and chipboard, nickel-plated tubes are fixed to connect the structure into a single whole.
  7. In the middle of the lighting device, an LED strip is fixed (it is cut in accordance with the dimensions of the circles of the inner diameter of the rings).
  8. Small rings are connected to the slats.
  9. Medium and large rings are alternately fixed.
  10. The top of the lighting device is put on the resulting design.

The wires must be connected to the RGB controller, which will facilitate the switching of lighting modes. With the remote, this is extremely easy.

All wires are hidden in a special cable, which is also given the necessary colors. Painting is carried out outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

If you have certain skills, making a lamp from an LED strip with your own hands is not so difficult if you strictly follow the step-by-step instructions. It is imperative to take into account the requirements for voltage and power in order to avoid damage to the product immediately upon connection.

    Спасибо за полезную информацию! Теперь надо мужу сказать, что хочу такую красоту на светильник. В принципе не особо сложно. Нужно купить светодиодную ленту, блок питания и алюминиевый уголок. Хочу светильник горизонтальный и с ножкой. Здесь подробно описаны два варианта, как сделать светильник с светодиодной лентой. Второй вариант будет посложнее, но думаю, что мой муж справится с этим заданием. Правда надо купить RGB-контролер с пультом. Будем выполнять пошагово по инструкции. Думаю, что получится очень красиво.

    Прочитав статью, мне захотелось изготовить свктодиодные светильники своими руками, тем более, что это не сложно, материалы и инструменты для этого вполне доступные. Главное при изготовлении, пошагово следовать указаниям статьи.  Я уже придумал где установлю такие ленты-светильники:на кухне-в рабочей зоне и в ванной возле зеркала. Не нужно будет приобретать зеркало с подсветкой, о котором  так давно мечтает моя жена. Я уже давно намеревался купить это зеркало, но останавливала цена. Предвкушаю радость моих домашних!

    Моя жена очень просила меня сделать точечное освещение и такое, чтобы это было красиво. по ее затее такое освещение должно было освещать картины в гостиной.
